but not at the expense of well lit, non- 'dark' area banding!! Noise, yes. Banding, never a feature I paid £3k to own.

telling me to turn of HTP is all well and good, but my camera exhibits banding without it on as well. Unfortunately.

From the article you link to:

"I don't use HTP for the same reason I don't shoot in auto-exposure mode. I want to be the one deciding how to expose the image, rather than the camera."

If it's occurring with HTP off as well, then exchange it for another body if possible. If it's not an option, contact Canon.
