Where it comes in extra handy is shooting action. You can avoid having to bump up the ISO in order to freeze the movement of your subjects. Helps with wing movement on birds also.

It's the main reason why the most popular professional DSLR zoom lenses are a constant f2.8 aperture. Nearly all sports photographers own a 70-200 f2.8 zoom lens usually along side one or more supertelephotos.
