In Aperture - as in almost all applications - what you see on the screen is controlled in the View and Windows menus. In this case in the View menu you go to Metadata Display

ISTR that the Metadata Display was one of the first places that I searched for a remedy, and that all it provided was a menu of parameters that could be shown in the Metadata inspector. Is my recollection wrong? Anyway, the lowercase 'u' toggle is the one that does what I was trying to accomplish. Thank you for responding to my plea for help.
