Re: roller derby photography....I take it you weren't using.. external flash, if so then you need to consider a s/hand FL36 or 50. Properly used, you can achieve higher shutter speed to help to freeze the action shots, with lower iso reduce noise , or with a diffuser or bounce card will also make a big difference for the individual & group pics, even with your exisiting lens, although if the budget will stretch far enough for a second hand 50-200 at some stage, then you will not regret it . good luck & don't forget to post some pics.
