Ray and many others recommend setting the Set AE-L button to AF-ON but later Ray comment:

I use the 18-200VRII, should I let the focus on normal “half press shutter option”?

Thanks

Really up to you....I now use back button (AE-L/AF-L button set to AF-ON) almost exclusively. Even with the 70-200 f2.8 as I really don't mind having VR limited to the shutter release button. Remember, VR still works as far as it's effect on limiting camera motion as soon as you take the pic. You just don't get that stable view-finder scene unless you hold the shutter release to half-press but that doesn't effect how VR works when the exposure is actually taken.
