D800 grey card exposure?

Hi,

I am a bit confused. I am creating a profile for my D800 and I have used the X-rite ColorPassport and now the QPcard 203 I got a few days ago and which seems to give a bit better color profile.

I tried to do this properly by using a 18% grey card when I set the exposure, I have not used that before when making profiles. I noticed that the ColorPassport sometimes struggled making a profile due to overexposure when I measure the grey card. If I underexposure it by one stop it seems to be good.

I have searched the web and I found mentioned some places that digital cameras measures for 12-13% grey, not 18%.

If that is true then to measure a 18% grey card will not give the correct exposure?

If I use a 18% grey card I should underexposure by half to one stop?
