I would start with obvious, cleaning contacts on the lens and camera, then I would check aperture iris works well, especially on the trouble most lens. You can do that with manually stepping down the lens and looking inside the lens from front. Then I would probably manually set the shutter to 1/2, 1, 2 sec etc and try to time it to make sure is consistent. I would also check where the clicking noise is: lens or camera?

There is probably couple more things you could check, but the bottom line is, you probably can't fix it yourself unless it's something trivial, like dirty contacts, so maybe try to identify if problem is lens or camera and probably contact Canon, so they should:
a) find exactly what the problem is
b) how much it would cost
Personally, I probably wouldn't spend much over $100 to fix it
