Can I use a different lens with a Canon?

Hi everyone! First time user. I am coming from a little point-and shoot, but I do have some experience with some classes and an old SLR. I am borrowing a friend's Canon 400D, to see if I like using a DSLR. I was given by another friend a few lenses. One of them is a JCPenny Macro lens. Its end looks like the opposite of Canon lenses. Is there any sort of (cheap) adapter I can get that will let me attach it to this Canon? I'd love to have a Macro lens, but I can't afford a new lens.. Anyone have any pointers?

Canon EOS 400D (EOS Digital Rebel XTi / EOS Kiss Digital X)
