Thank you for your considered response and examples.

From what I can determine the E-M5 does not exhibit the same behavior as the earlier pens with regard to shadow pulls where the image would be mostly noise - there definitely appears to be less noise at the bottom. The noise is just too high there on the earlier models.

Recently, I took pictures in a redwood forest. The dynamic range is way more than my camera could handle and I did bracket to compensate. But if any of the data slid off the left it was completely useless. I'm not expecting a miracle, just something I can work with.
