Unfortunately I have to agree. Just got the D800 3 days ago and shot at a wedding yesterday (non professionally). Compared to the D300 extensively, and yes, the grip is thinner forcing you to squeeze down harder, and the new position of the shutter forces the hand a little lower, so you got even less to hold the weight. Combined with the heavy FF lenses, it puts a severe strain on the hand.

If you support the weight with the left hand, I fond the grip very comfortable, but you can't always do that, so it is tiring. Time for a grip? Sucks it is só expensive...
