Re: The ONLY reason to buy a camera

My first digital camera was a Kodak DX6440, and it lasted about 4 months. Followed by a Canon G5 which lasted over a year. Then an S50 traded for an S70. Got a 20D and after I got really tired lugging it around Rome on a hot day, I bought a Pro 1. In a quest for a better pocket camera, I've owned the S80, SD800IS, SD850IS, SD870IS, SD880IS, SD950IS, and finally the S90. After the G5, I had the G6, G7, G9, and G12. In a quest for the best superzoon there was the S3IS, S5IS, SX10IS, FZ28, FZ35, and FZ150. Then in the travel zoom category these have been the ZS3, ZS15, and SX230HS. That's 25 different models; but if you count more than one of a model, it adds up a lot higher. For example, I've had 5 different Pro 1's - I've had a love-hate relationship with that one. Currently I own the S90, SX230HS, FZ150, G9, and a 60D. My wife has the A710IS, and that's her third, all A series. In DSLR's it has been the 20D, XT, XTi, XSi, 30D, 50D, D90, and 60D. The 50D lasted a week and I went back to the 30D.

Some of the cameras, I form an attachment to and don't want to get rid of them. The S90 with the Franiec grip is one of those. I had the G7 from introduction until this spring, when a used G9 replaced it. The 30D was a favorite, as was the S70 and SD950IS. The FZ150 is going to be here a long time, as I like using it and it performs brilliantly. The weak link is the SX230HS. I think it's the best in class for my needs; but I haven't really warmed up to it.

So why haven't I dashed out to be first in line for the RX100? First, it only fits in the niche occupied by the S90. Second, I like the S90, I'm not annoyed by it; and it works well in it's niche. Its long list of precessors did not meet my needs for that niche and didn't survive. I just can't see spending $750 ($650 for the RX100 + at least $100 for accessories) to replace something that works well.
