RX100-I changed my mind

When the I-R review of the RX100 came out, I was hot to get one as soon as they were available and after some user reviews came in.

But then, I thought, how bad is my S90? I've been happy with it for over two years now - how bad could it be? So I took a series of shots from ISO 200 to ISO 3200 in my den of a large stuffed toy tiger. (about 1/2 life size - I said it was large) Tony is my test subject for indoor tests of cameras and lenses.

Anyway, ISO 400 was the sharpest because the shutter speed at ISO 200 was so slow I was starting to get motion blur. ISO 1600 was fine for medium sized prints up to 8" x 10"; and even ISO 3200 is Ok for a 5" x 7". These shots were all zoomed in a bit, so the aperture was f/4. Most of my indoor use of the S90 is for larger subjects or rooms, so most shots are at 28-35 mm, equivalent, and the aperture is then f/2, or close to it. Full zoom and the smaller apertures are mostly used outdoors under better light and at lower ISO.

So the bottom line here is that the S90 is perfectly fine for what I use it for, and it's paid for. The RX100 is $650, and adding a spare battery, a real external battery charger, and a Franiec grip will run the cost up over $750. That's a lot of bucks to replace something that doesn't need replacing.

Rest easy, little S90, you're safe (at least for now).
