In my quest to find a good, practical walkaround lens, the suggestion of maybe using the Canon 18-135mm lens has come up a few times. Til then, I had pretty much decided to utilize a Tamron 17-50 2.8 lens for that purpse....

Both are pretty good. I use the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 a lot. It certainly has
a slight edge over the Canon 18-135mm IS and 18-55mm IS in terms of
sharpness, colour and contrast.

I have had experience with the Tammy, and have always been impressed with it's high level of IQ. But the increased reach of the 18-135 is also tempting.

So I guess I need to know that if I were VERY pleased with the Tamron lens, would I be disappointed with the IQ of the longer Canon lens?

I have both lenses and I'm certainly not disappointed with either one.

The Tamron (non-VC) is my overall favourite and it is my most frequently used lens.

IQ is really my #1 concern. So if you feel the IQ of the 18-135mm is really good, I would then opt for it for it's larger FL.

As above, the Tamron is measurably superior. The 18-135mm has received some bad press, but I think it is a pretty good lens. Mine is quite sharp.

I do have a 35 f2 for lower light situations.

I suppose that complicates things a little

Your thoughts? I'm really close to needing to make a decision here. Thanks.

You have a decision to make. If I was in your situation, I would probably take the Tamron. The slightly better IQ would be more important to me than the extra FL and IS. Your priorities may be different.
