Poll: With or Without the MB-D100?

I'm buying one for myself next month after borrowing one from a friend. It balances the camera in portrait shoot and you're holding camera in its natural position.
The camera has always felt better in MY hands with the MB-D100 on...
i never take it off... even though i rarely need its other features
or extra battery life.

what about the rest of you?

Hi all,

Well, nobody has mentined about the ability of the MB-D100 to record sound. Maybe this reflect the extent of this function's popularity?

The extra grip and relase button, etc, is certainly nice, although I have less needs for them than most people. I also like the way the D100 don't move around when I hung it over my sholder or neck when MB-D100 is attached.

But, the real reason I love my newly acquired MB-D100 is its sound recording function! It recods sounds with much better sound quality than I had expected, and the playback is plenty clear and loud. And the best of all, the Nikon View alows me to easily manage an images and a sound together.
This makes D100 an ideal companion for a travel.

Regards,
Naoki

It has a button at the side and it'll record your voice while you press it. If the button is pressed when the image is not shown on LCD it'll record your voice to the last immage taken. If any image is shown the sound will be attached to the photo shown. Well, it doesn't really record the sound in the image, but they are together as far as the playback is concerned. Actually the sound file is wav format with the same file name. So, when you attach a voice, you will find, say DSC_0001.NEF and DSC_0001.WAV in the same folder. It's really a practical system. MB-D100 also has a buil-in speaker and it's pretty good.

You can record anything you like, of course. I use it when I meet people, especially for the first time. I take a snap and ask them to say something. They often just giggle and don't say anything coherent, but still it's a big plus to the photo, I'd say!

You can record upto 20sec and the sound file of 20sec is about 200kb, I think.
So, it's not so much a strain if you are using 1GB Microdrive.

Naoki

what about the rest of you?
I bought mine immediately with my D100. Since I've only had the set for over a week I have not really been using the MB-D100 yet, although it definitely feels better with it attached.

The problem I have however is that the camera came with a bag (Tamrac Superlight 5) which seems ideal for the D100+2/3lenses+speedlight, but as soon as the MB is attached, there is no way to get the camera in the bag (unless I would remove the lens, which obviously is stupid). So that's why the MB stayed at home for now.

What bags would people recommend for D100+MB-D100 plus 2 zoom lenses and speedlight ?

Tnx,

Henk.

My only beef w/it is that it does not fit in to my Nikon soft side
case. I like to use the smaller case from time to time, when I
don't need to carry a full arsenal of lenses / SB-80DX, etc. ---
but I have to dismantle the MB and take it off, which I hate.
Bill, get a Zing Large SLR case. It's a stetch, but it fits my D100, with the MB-D100 AND Stroboframe tripod QR AND Nikon wrist strap, even with my 80-400 on with hood reversed (or easily with the 24-85G with hood on! And it folds into my pocket when the camera's in use... It's less than $40 at B&H or Adorama.

Henk, you can use a regular bag as samll as a Lowepro Nova 3 unless you have a large zoom. I have used this but recently changed to a Micro Trekker 200 which I love. It's compact, inobtrusive, and holds an inordinate amount of stuff. Right now it's got the D100 with MB (made even deeper with a wrist strap and tripod qr), Nikkors 24-85, 20-35, 80-400, and 500 mirror, SB80, cleaning bulb, spare batteries for flash, Nikon 77mm Pola in case, CF cards, etc., etc., etc...

has anyone found a holster bag that the combo will fit?

I've worn holsters for 35 years and hate to swtich now. But I have the biggest holster LowePro and Tamrac make and the combo doesn't fit either.

Anyone experienced a better holster?

If I want to use a big camera, I'd use my D1H. I got the D100 so that it DOESN'T look too professional. (It's my toy camera. :)

It only looks professional when I stick a stroboframe Press-T, sb-80 and DCB on it. ;)

I like using the MB100 especially when I have a longer or heavier lens mounted. It provides a counter weight that makes things balance better.

The double battery life (with two EN-EL3s) can't be beat either.

The connection between the MB and D100 is sloppy. If you use a tripod, the stability is better without. I am disappointed as to how cheaply made the MB is. The letters on the buttons rubbed off during the first use.

Scott

I tried the Lowepro S&F Toplaoder 75AW and it didn't work for me without a lot of stretching, but that's because I have extra garbage (wrist strap and qr bracket) under the grip. With that stuff removed, it seemed to fit fine, but I didn't use it in shooting situations. I didn't buy it because I wanted to keep the extras installed, and went with the Micro Trekker 200 instead. From dimensions on their site, it would seem the Tolpoad Pro would also fit. Have these both been unusable for you?

Thanx, both for the info.

I'll check out the Kinesis site.

...and I'm not sure if the Toploader Pro is one of the ones I tried...I bought the largest LowePro holster B&H had in stock (truthfully don't remember the model off top of my head -- it's at home), and then, when that didn't fit, just started carrying the camera to dealers and trying it in all of the large holsters they had.

I'll definately check the two you mentioned out...

thanx
