How to save DVDs and video for future generations (OT)

Hi all,

Sorry for this off-topic topic, but I've been wondering about this lately. My kids are 10 and 8, and we've been taking video of them since they were born. All the video has been transferred to (so far) 50 DVDs. (These DVDs have menus, chapter breaks, etc.)

Knowing that technology will change, and they certainly won't be showing DVDs to their own kids (and we all know that the data on DVDs degrades, too), what are you all doing to preserve videos for future technologies and future generations? (For my photos, I print every year's best on non-acid archival paper and also make photo books.)

Should I just make "disk images" (or whatever they're called) of each DVD and put them all on an external drive somewhere? (Most of the original video files are gone, though I do still have some DV tapes around.)

Or what are you all doing?

All ideas welcome. Thanks!
