But Nikon AND Canon have a history of being less than wonderful with service. That's my experience as well.

Yet your D800 is a NEW model and under warranty and they must fix or exchange it. Don't sit around and wait. You bought a pro body for 3K and deserve a properly working unit like most of the others. I seriously doubt Nikon is in any hurry to announce a problem if they feel they can work out the kinks quickly. Get it adjusted.

But this cry that the sky is falling and half of the cameras are bad is just silly. I've seen more D800's than Thom Hogan and all are fine. And even he says there's no reason not to order a D800.
