I went to the Kruger National Park earlier this year and bought a complete Canon outfit for the trip. Completely new to Canon the camera threw me a bit (especially focusing) but on the whole I was very pleased with it. The longest lens I had with me was a 70-300L which for this trip was a little short and slow for the early morning shots.

I was staying near Crocodile Gate and the best sights we saw were within 30 mms of the gate early morning. There is also a huge population of Rhinos in this area. Even saw 9 of them together having a bath!

If you haven't booked accommodation yet check out Buckler's Africa. A fabulous location on Crocodile River.
