First, I am somewhat surprised that this old murky thread has woken up again

Second, the SD1m probably uses the same batch of sensors as SD1. The SD1 sold probably did not use the entire batch. Batches are usually in the order of 10,000.

So - if the decreased cost info is true - then they somehow have found a way of getting better yield from the batch already made, maybe by lowering quality requirements or maybe by improving some usage.

All this said - it might be best not speculating too much. Speculations might be fun, but taken too far they probably are wrong.
