You can also reduce the dynamic range of a scene by shooting early or late in the day. Shooting under full sun is a bad situation to try to make the best of and it is seldom necessary.

Galen Rowell was famous for leaving his campsite in the dark to be at a chosen spot just as the sun was rising. He got the pictures he had visualized by getting there at the best possible time even if that meant hiking in the dark.

Post processing should always be a last resort to get the image we visualize of a scene we want to capture.
