NX200 day 1, first impressions.
Jun 20, 2012
well time to try out my new camera :). Updated firmware to 1.04 and took it to the cheshire show. I chose not to take any NX lenses as life is more fun in manual. All shots taken with a hexanon 40/1.8.
Whats good/great and bad after the nx100
shutter lag, it doesnt have any. Such a breath of fresh air.
BUT i had heard mention of this and took no notice at the time, but the shutter is quite violent and can cause movement and lower speeds 1/16 for e.g. . getting a good grip on the body seems to stop it but the shutter is a violent rat trap of a mech.
range,, where to start. keep in mind this is day 1 so i may change my views on this. I was shooting at +1 1/3ev at times and i i dont think i lost a single highlight all day. The nx100 was a bit delicate in this area but the nx200 seems to just grab all the data and more.
I am thinking though that in general for raw shooters where i used -0.3ev as my standard i will be shooting +2/3ev not so much because it under exposes (which i think it may do, too soon to say yet though) but because it seems to just eat up harsh light and store it perfectly.
I did test the AF before i went out and it felt a lot faster, but too soon to comment beyond that as yet.
build is really nice, i really did like the nx100 but i could see why in the shop it might put someone off. the nx200 is very solid.
So day 1 conclusions:
I'm glad i bought the nx200 but i think the nx100 still a very good performer and could keep up in most areas. Functionally i dont see any massive improvements, biggest may be the x5/x8 (i preferred x5) zoom for manual focus. There pixel level detail is maybe better on the nx100 as the nx200 is slightly granular. Might just be the glass im using not able to resolve the 20meg, but this is the glass i use.
The dynamic range is the key though, i like to shoot b&w usually and the range will prove very handy.
i'll give it 9/10, 10/10 if i didnt have to read the word " processing "
