That's exactly my theory--and sort of the gist of my long question. I'm seeing the same thing. It's as if the idea of the "P" mode on the D5100 is to "make the picture look as good as possible with no further manipulation expected" while the "P" mode for the D800E aims to "keep all the important data so that it can be made to look good later with adjustments."

Maybe not all "P" modes are created equal? That makes sense, of course, given the difference in the expected users of each camera type.
