A small ode to trap focus in Magic Lantern

I finally got a chance to use Trap Focus with Magic Lantern on my T1i this weekend. It had a massive impact on my handheld macro keeper rate and made the whole experience of handheld macro much more dynamic and enjoyable.

Overall settings:

  • Tv mode at 1/200s

  • Interfit Strobies STR110 flash diffuser on the lens hood of an EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM

  • ISO high enough to get good depth of field

  • -1 - -2 Ev exposure comp (to darken the background a bit)

  • 0 Ev flash exposure comp

  • pick your focal point and move until it beep-clicks ... or occasionally fire manually when you know you want the shot in the viewfinder.

Results:

Everything newer than the primrose (up to the bee pictured here) was taken using trap focus-enabled shooting.
