Re: New to flash and studio lighting

My first suggestion is that you return the lighting kit for credit toward a studio strobe lighting kit if you want to do portraiture. Continuous lighting is fine for non-animate subjects but the long shutter speed required make shooting animate objects without getting images that aren't blurred problematic.

Read my article on equipment for a small home studio for information on what I recommend.

As far as books for flash go, you can't find anything better than Syl Arena's book, "Speedliter's Handbook". It is written for the Canon Speedlite user but 98% of what is in the book is applicable to any hot-shoe flash.

For general information about digital photography and portraiture check the following links.

I also suggest you join the PhotoCamel forum. It is a very friendly forum and you will find many specialty forums with many active participants, including a number of professional photographers, who are willing to help.

Here are some links to useful tutorials found on PhotoCamel.
