I have a D4 and the 400, shooting with both a wimberly and monopod set ups. You can't do any better for low light tele work. You can always add an extender and the image rendition on the 400 is superb, best of the exotic nikons. The focusing is a bit slow at low light, couldn't imagine trying to shoot flying birds at low light with a 500. Best sports lens made.
