SX40 - A realworld ISO ladder

Hi all,

We were impressed with SX40 high-ISO performance well before we got ours. It was in fact the many surprisingly good high-ISO images posted by other CTF members which prompted us to finally buy one. So here I'd like to share a collection of SX40 images arranged as a "realworld" ISO ladder. By which I mean, these shots were taken over the ISO range outdoors in varied natural lighting conditions, as opposed to being an "in-studio" test series.

These were all shot hand-held, in natural light, as detuned jpegs, and processed in Photoshop... [they do not represent sooc output] . Variations in the scenes, distances, focal lengths, and cropping for composition make comparisons of the images with each other somewhat non-linear. Noise reduction however has been applied to the backgrounds only and not to the subjects, to preserve the feather detail originally captured.

Like any camera, best SX40 image quality is achieved at base ISOs. But the extent to which it excels at higher ISOs as compared to our other superzooms has been a very pleasant surprise to us. The low noise and clean detail retained at higher ISOs is allowing us to frequently capture image quality in low light situations that we simply cannot match with our other cameras.
