Pushing the exposure for shadow detail is what dynamic range is all about. And the E-M5 does quite well (likely around 12 EV there).

Also it very results in banding which I have so far only seen in their images...

Some images show banding after pushing dark shadows, some do not. I have two versions of the very same scene, using the same settings, just seconds apart, one with and without easily visible banding (after pushing those supposedly 12 EV to its limit).

I have seen far worse banding noise from the X10 at high ISO. Try to shoot an outdoor photo showing parts of the night-sky via the X10's Night Scene mode. Banding galore!
