Be happy it was not a 500mm f/4 IS L lens hood...

Geez, whining about $4 or $40! I fell holding my 500mm f/4 IS L lens and cracked the lens hood and stripped the threads on the lens collar foot. I had to send the whole lens back to Canon for repair, and they charged me (eventually the insurance company) $1,000 to replace the tripod collar (attached to a bunch of electronics) and "repair" the cracked lens hood.

Canon's repair? They attached some black tape to the inside and outside of the lens hood where the several-inches long crack was.

Of course, I could have just bought a new lens hood, but Canon lists that part at $500! It is truly hard for me to imagine they charge $500 for a plastic tube with no glass, but that's Canon.
