You are correct. IRS has no say in state sales tax.

Also, an IRS audit will trigger an alert to the Franchise tax board, at least in my state:

"If the IRS has completed an examination of your tax return and issued a revenue agent report (RAR), you must to notify us within 6 months of each final federal determination. You must report all changes or corrections to gross income or deductions, even if the changes or corrections do not result in an increase in tax payable to the Franchise Tax Board (FTB) for any income year."

I'm not necessarily happy with how some of my tax money gets spent, and for some small items, I likely haven't paid the State tax.

But for the tens of thousands of dollars of major photo equipment purchases, I choose to comply with the law.

Others are free to make their own choices.

Anyway, this forum is not the best place to seek tax advice!
