Lloyd Chambers examples are very good. I noticed myself when I was taking picture of church mosaics (in Italy) that the details were sometimes "washed out". My guess is that, depending on the magnification, the fine lines between the tiles enter the cut-off frequency of the AA-filter and start to faint (mostly when 1 to 2 pixels wide). Taking the picture at a higher magnification and downsampling the images kept much better details! So yes, I am convinced that in some circumstances the downsampled D800 will keep more details than my D300.
