It takes more than a blurred background. In the case of the Lantana part of the depth separation comes from the dramatic color contrast.

I've used several types of adjustments to enhance the dimensionality but a true 3d effect is not possible from a single flat image. A stereoscope would work from two images. TV glasses (shutters or polarized) for also work with paired images .

Having said that, take another look at the sheep image. Move your head slightly and the differing planes are noticeable. The background, for example, seems to move separately. This is a subtle effect created by micro-adjustments not just blur. The effect would probably only be visible on monitors. Prints would look flatter.

This degree of dimensionality seems new (to me).
