Sure it's a great lens, but the IS in the 17-55 helps bring it's low light capability to better than this L lens.

Instead bring a 10-22 or a 5-250 (or the L 70-300). The 10-22 will save you weight and is stunning. So is the 70-300, but kind of heavy and $$.

I've brought fast wide angles. No, I don't use them much. Especially on a crop; they're no longer wide angle.

I own the 17-55, 10-22, 35L. Personally I look at the 35L as serving a different purpose than a 17-55: it's my 50mm fast prime for shallow DOF and available light that can be used on subjects that don't hold perfectly still. My 17-55 is my favorite all around lens, but, when I shoot low light with it, I'm cranking up the ISO, which isn't that good given my old 40D.

But, I agree with you: If you bring two lens, I'd rather go 17-55 and 10-22. Or go 17-55, 10-22, and a 35/2 (if you own one). 35/2 is smaller than a 50/1.4 and you can usually sneak that into your bag.
