Lens Calibration

A lot of the pictures I take with my 70-300 are rubbish but that's because the operator is rubbish and my chosen subject matter tends to be challenging. However I don't really know if I am getting the best from the lens and thought maybe i should calibrate. But and it's a big BUT, I am nervous about it making things wose. I'm a clumsy b* r and if something can be wrecked I will have a good try.

SO two questions.
1. What tests can I carry out to see if i would benefit
2. Is it something everybody should do anyway
