This was a Film School project, so I'm sure that they were doing it like the pros do. A sound mixer doing the recording, and a boom operator controlling the mic placement. Typically they use a cardioid mic as close to the frame-line as possible. As the actor moves the boom operator moves the boom/mic to keep it in the best position.

Read a book on Motion Picture sound recording. Good technique is more important than the mic you use.

Yes, yes, I'm aware there isn't a Magic Bullet mic... how crude.
