Re: Extender/Teleconverter

There are 1.4x and 2x teleconverters made by Canon (and indeed third parties) but they are not really designed to work on a basic lens like the 55-250mm.

The main problem is that when you add an extender, you effectively narrow your aperture - losing one stop of light on a 1.4x, and 2 stops of light on a 2x converter.

This is fine when you are looking at a fast high end prime like a 300mm f2.8 and a high end body that can focus at slower apertures, but attempting to use it with a more basic model will just test the system too much and you will be left with poor (if at all) AF and a very slow lens.

You do sometimes see cheap add on lenses to go on the front of a lens to get more reach, but in general I would avoid these as poor quality.

Sadly the only option to get more reach is to save up for on of the bigger lenses - check out the third party options from the likes of Tamron and Sigma for a slightly less pricy entry into the super telephoto lenses.
