Maybe just sample variation? Was your comparison back-to-back with the same camera, target, and lighting?
To my knowledge there have been no changes in the production of this lens.

re image quality, how much better is the 2.8 IS v2 compared to this one?

I don't have the II IS so can't speak from my own experience. I do know mine is very good. But my best results are when I brace myself well or use a tripod. Hand-held and working fast my pics suck from motion blur.

They weren't available when I bought mine, but if I were shopping today I would definitely go for an IS model. Either the f/2.8L II IS if money were no object, or if limited to
