Just drag n drop the firmware file - i.e. 1.30 FPUPDATE.DAT - to a 'clean' empty SD card (either the icon or open disk 'folder')

Root directory just means the disk itself - so not into a folder, or folders, you may have created for image storage - that's why you need a clean, empty, camera formatted SD card - not a used one, with image data on it ... which can confuse the camera and result in a failed update.
