Have you learned about virtual copies yet? If not, it is a feature that you might be very interested in as you are experimenting with different ways to process the same image in LR.

Select an image, then right click and choose Virtual Copy (keyboard shortcut Ctrl '). You can select any history state and make a VC from that point. You can make as many as you want and try different ways of processing them (without having to undo your previous work).

VC's don't actually make real copies of the files, so there is almost no disk space used for these. They are only viewed in LR, but you can export them as you would any other file if you want to.

VC's are also great if you like different crops of the same image. Or if you want a color version and a B/W version....
