I would say, built in flash is no different to built in LCD or built in JPEG processor. it is there so you have this option to use it. but if you want the best result there is always better option. it is not so much a compromise as it is a convenience. These try to somehow make it out to be a mistake to include flash must be the same people thought adding a preview LCD in cameras was a stupid idea too.
