How to get 400mm f/2.8 for $300

It has to do with distortion, that's for sure, but also just the way the lens handles the foreground, background, and as perspective is a somewhat subjective term beyond the basic denotation, it's also a quality that you can't get with a different lens set. It's not as though you can take a shot at 200mm and remove the distortion and then move up a calculated distance and take a shot at say 50mm and remove the distortion and expect them to be exactly the same, I don't think they would be. Maybe I'm wrong on this one, but from what I've done with photography, it feels like that isn't the case.
