I don't think that IQ is much better than the 70-300mm NON L. I guess you pay for the build quality, that's all. Many people have been disappointed about this lens IQ not being L quality. And, is super heavy.

I upgraded from a 70-300IS to 70-300IS L. The L is noticeably better in many ways, but the overall difference is I get many more keepers and generally significantly better quality images. The L:

  • is sharper (especially wide open at 300mm)

  • has better colour/contrast

  • has much faster focusing

  • has better IS

  • has better build quality

  • is shorter but is heavier

Though f5.6 is slow for a maximum aperture, the lens delivered good bokeh on portraits (makes my 17-55 IS look very averagein comparison ..... though focal length trumps the aperature difference in this comparison)
