Seriously though, popup flash is good for impromptu fill flash on backlit people snaps, and as wireless commander. Aaand ... that's about it.

Who takes spur-of-the-moment family snaps with a 5DmkX? Pros on assignment don't, they pack speedlights. But Ken Rockwell does, for one.

Given how many serious amateurs have actually bought the 5DmkX as their main camera and also use it for holidays and family stuff, it's a bit odd there's no popup flash. "Hey dad, take a family picture of us in front of this monument with the setting sun behind us". Sorry kids, it won't work out, my 5DmkX doesn't have a popup flash.
