New D600 rumor update - with focus motor, 39pt AF and 24.7MP

The latest rumor update on the D600:

  • Will have focus motor

  • 39pt AF

  • 24.7MP FX sensor

  • EN-EL15 battery

  • 760g weight

This is matching up well with a D7000 type body with an FX sensor. The battery, AF, weight and focus motor are all consistent with a D7000 type body.

For comparison and to try to guess where it fits in build, the D800 has higher-end AF, though the same battery.

The D7000 has the same battery and same AF points. The D5000 has a lower end AF and battery.

The D300 has an older battery (which Nikon doesn't make any more) and a higher end AF.

For weight, it is more than D7000, less than D800 which would also be consistent with being a D7000 type body, but with the larger FX mirror housing.

So if these rumors are on target, it looks like it fits close to the D7000 in general capabilities, but obviously with a new FX sensor and likely larger mirror assembly than the D7000 to hold the FX mirror.

The price is a wild guess still, but if you start with the base price of the D7000 at $1199, one could imagine the FX sensor and larger mirror assembly adds $400-$800 and perhaps a little cost reduction in parts since the D7000, one could imagine a price range of $1499 - $1899.

At these specs, it will be a pretty interesting entry level FX body, but it won't replace either the D700 FX or the D300s DX for action (lower spec AF and fps). If they fix the AF issues that the D7000 seemed to have, it could be a great camera for lots of indoor venues that aren't fast action.
