That also is wrong. 4x more of the same pixels and 4x larger sensor will increase DR and SNR. That is easy to see in practice, just comparing the Nikon D7000 and D800.

Is this pretty much because each of those little "buggers" has less to do? 4 of them doing the work that 1 used to? (in attempting to understand?)

That's a pretty good metaphor. Noise is a random variation, so it will tend to average out when you combine pixels, whereas the signal adds.

Bob, maybe you have a comment to my little debate below with Anders W about the resolution of perfectly scaled lenses/systems? It's a bit complex.. did I miss something?
