I just received my new 85mm f1.4G and just went over the lens.

I was surprised that the lens’s outer barrel (the outside) seems to be made of plastic (polycarbonate??).

I specifically read in a few reviews that it's made of magnesium.

Can anyone confirm whether or not it's plastic or metal? (the outer barrel)

Rather disappointed, as my 14-24mm f2.8, 24-70mm f2.8, and 70-200mm f2.8 all are distinctly made of magnesium and feel more solid (perhaps in due in part to the increased weight).

Also noticed that the rubber gasket that "seals" with the camera does not have a perfectly even height around the lens (ie - one side is perhaps 0.5mm higher). Am I being too picky here? Then again, what does Nikon expect from photographers buying equipment in this price range?

Also a “cuff” along the inside of the barrel front, in between where the filter would screw on and the glass itself.

Would any of you out there return a lens for this?

It's metal, with a shell of "plastic". But really, we're not talking 1990's or even 2004's plastic, we're not talking kids toys plastic, we're talking solid polycarbonate, which is a much better solution than an all metal construction. Why? For example, plastic can bend ever so slightly, take a hit a bit better than metal (because it can bend ever so slightly it means all the force of the hit won't get transported INTO the lens, if that made any sense). Also, it's lighter (just think about how much that bd would weigh if it was all metal...) and isn't prone to adjusting to temperatures as fast as metal (cold/heat).

It is an absolutely amazing lens to use (yes, I own one), good luck on your journey with it!
