Agreed. Sometimes the birds can be too close. I had a Siberian chiffchaff making its way along a hedge I was "hiding" in get to within three feet of my 500mm! And I've had a Great grey shrike perched on the chair hide I was in (preferring that to its usual perch which I had staked out for half the morning). But that, like your penguins, is the exception
