Why doesn't 12mp sensors in MFT have better high iso performance than 16mp??

In m43 land with 4:3 AR you have 225mm^2 to work with. With competent microlensing and electronics layout, the size of individual sensels don't factor in total light collection. And that is the only useful measure of S/N ratio.

So why is one sensor better than the other? Advances in design, fabrication and engineering between generations.

But there is a new generation 12 megapixels sensor on the GF5, and I have seen samples compared to the GF3, it is really better
