Maybe a lot of people wouldn't notice any difference, but there's an old adage, "the wider the range, the worse the lens". A 24 to 240 would be an awful lens. The most respected Canon L lenses are lenses like the 24-70 L.

That's for sure.

As a rough guide, take the longest focal length and divide it by the shortest focal length. If the answer is much over 3 than it's not so good. If it's over 5 then it will be awful.
