This possibly makes you technically minded George. Hence your beef above. My wife for instance would not understand a technical explanation on the first read, the narrative is an important step that she sometimes requires.

I did not explain myself properly. By "initial, informative overview" I did not mean an explanation of features. I meant a concise graphical overview which puts all settings in context, so that when they are referred to later on in the narrative the reader has some sense of where they belong. But... this is a highly personal observation...

Regardless, I think the book is well worth it, and I have no doubt I will get back to it as a reference.
