Your results and observations concur with 2 or 3 other serious reviews of the D800 with the most recent being Fred Miranda. The 14-24 Nikkor is no doubt a phenomenal lens and the best ultra-wide zoom hands down but for some reason it appears to be falling down on edge and corner peformance on the D800. Being primes and the very large image circle projection of the Canon TSE's is obviously giving them a big advantage.
