Jack, thank you. No offence taken, I was more worried that I might sounds arrogant because I didn't really warm to the 28-300. There are many photographers who like it a lot. I don't think it's specific to the D800 either, I didn't like the look of the pictures on the D700 either. So take it as a personal taste thing.

I am finding that I am more inclined to use primes since I have the D800. I have the 50mm 1.4G and the 85mm 1.8G. I am also thinking of getting the 28mm 1.8g. I would love the 24mm 1.4g, but I can't convince myself to take out the money yet. I find with these fast primes and a usable ISO up to 6400, there is virtually no situation that the camera can't handle.

I have a 70-200 and a 70-300. I rarely use the 70-300, but it is nice and light if I need something to walk around with. I use the 70-200 mostly for sports with the kids, even with the 2x TCIII converter it is still sharp and punchy. For my taste the 70-300 is preferable to the 28-300.
